Misusing the Middle Ages
as Amy S. Kaufman
Brutal torture, endless religious warfare, illiterate peasants, and white knights on horseback saving helpless virgins from towers: this is how most people imagine the medieval world. But this image of the Middle Ages isn’t just wrong—it can be dangerous, especially when it’s used to justify violence.
That’s why Paul Sturtevant and I are writing Misusing the Middle Ages for the University of Toronto Press. We’ll explore how myths about the medieval past have supported nationalism, racism, religious extremism, and social control. We’ll also contrast long-held illusions about the Middle Ages with true stories from a rich, complex, and vibrant medieval world.
